Fall Open Studios Recap

•November 30, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Its been a busy few months with Open Studios and the holidays. I met all kinds of interesting folks at the 3 Open Studios events. Thanks to everyone who came out to visit. During October, I moved from my Santa Cruz Studio to a new shared studio in Hunters Point Shipyard. We had over 5000 people visit the Hunters Point Shipyard Artist Studios. I have fabulous studio-mates and am looking forward to all sorts of new collaborations. I’ve been getting my old Asbern letterpress up and running thanks to Allen Hillsheim and Leah Jachimowicz. In November, I scored a humongous 4 x 8 (YES!!!) motorized Takach etching press from Sharon Heitzenroder and had it moved from Oakland to SF. That took 4 guys, a big truck and removing a wall from the studio. Needless to say, I’ve fallen behind on my actual art projects and prep for Holiday Sales. Oh well, 2012 is looking promising. 🙂

Start of the Edition

•August 10, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Up to now I’ve been doing test prints. Here I go starting my edition varie. This print took way many MANY more hours and I expected. (sigh) the downside of large prints. But I like them as monochromes… might skip the color. it would require accurate registration and a few more passes through the press on the same paper. we’ll see. the whole thing gets chine colle’d onto a 36 x 48 sheet of BFK.

Monotype Intensive Workshop – photos

•May 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Here are photos from the workshop that we took (thanks to Susan Spann & Jenny Robinson). I used one of the drawings from the Farm debris series and created a plate from a piece of varnished illustration board. A much cheaper, faster alternative than copper plate.

Artist Misaki Matsui – photos from Kala

•May 23, 2011 • Leave a Comment

Had a really wonderful 2 weekend Monotype Intensive workshop at Kala taught by Jenny Robinson. We had lots of printing time and fabulous instruction. During the class I met Misaki Matsui, a fellow Kala artist who is working a photo series of artists at work. She was kind enough to send me 2 of the photos she took. Can’t wait to see how her series turns out.

Here’s number 3. I think its time to try printing these as trace monotypes. I’m taking another Monotype class up at Kala with Jenny Robinson this month.

WIP – Farm Debris

These are taking a really long time. Here are the first 2 value patterns (drawings) of the images that I will use to create the trace monotypes. I think I’ll take this to get copied onto vellum so I have multiples of each drawing to use for as a basis for my Edition Varie.

Can’t wait to see how the drawing will change during the entire process. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.

New Series – Farm Debris

•January 27, 2011 • Leave a Comment

FINALLY… started my Farm Debris Series. I’ve had these pictures for over a year and have been trying to figure the best process to draw/print them so they are large, iconic, and sooty looking. Here are the xeroxed photos enlarged 400%.

I’ll use these enlarged prints to create drawing that will then become trace monotypes. (see the test prints I made.I took a class with Jenny Robinson at Kala to learn the technique.)
